St. Andrew’s Descent is one of the oldest streets connecting the Saint Andrew’s Church and the upper town to the lower town. It is one of the major touristic attractions of the capital, famous for being the place where past writers, scholars and artists lived and worked. It is also an open air market where you’ll find paintings, Soviet memorabilia and various hand made products. The Descent is sometimes nicknamed the Montmartre of Kiev: you will always see hundreds of artists presenting their work – jewelry, ornaments, dishes, pottery and glass ceramics, funny figurines wooden figurines, toys, coins, medals and much more. You can buy souvenirs and paintings at very moderate prices, and actors, singers and musicians regularly animate the street. Since many tourists visit this street, merchants tend to inflate their prices. Be sure not to show too much eagerness for an item and make use of your bargaining skills.
