In 1891 the Square had a different name – Karavaeva – to honor a famous scientist and Doctor Vladimir Karavaev. One of the most famous buildings on this square is the Mihelson bathhouse, more known as Karaveva bathhouse. In 1939 the square got its current name. In 1981 the metro station was opened on this square. The building that had the access to the station also holds computer-machine center of the Kiev subway.
